Geothermal vs conventional HVAC: compare the whole project.

The equipment label is only one part of the decision. A useful comparison starts with the same verified home load, then accounts for the loop, ducts, electrical needs, backup heat, installation scope and ownership pathway.

Geothermal can provide efficient, quiet heating and cooling with indoor compressor equipment and a long-lived ground heat exchanger. Conventional furnace-and-air-conditioning or air-source heat-pump systems usually require less property work and can be simpler to replace. The better choice depends on the verified load, site, distribution system, project scope and the homeowner’s ownership goals.

Keep the comparison fair: Do not compare a complete geothermal project to an equipment-only conventional price. Put permits, electrical work, ducts, controls, water-heating connections, restoration, warranties, service obligations and excluded conditions on the same page.

STARTING POINT

Use the same house and the same verified load.

A comparison becomes misleading when geothermal is sized from one assumption and the conventional option from another. Both pathways should begin with the same conditioned area, envelope, infiltration, design temperatures, room loads and duct conditions.

Nominal tons are not delivered capacity.

The final equipment model must be checked against manufacturer heating and cooling performance at the project’s design conditions. The lite quote tool shows a planning class only and clearly flags selections that fall outside the maintained online pricebook.

PROPERTY FEASIBILITY

The loop is part of the geothermal system—not an accessory.

Vertical bores, horizontal slinky fields, horizontal directional bores, open-loop wells and pond or lake loops answer different land, water, access and permitting questions. A selected map location is useful for the first site conversation, but it does not establish bore depth, pipe length, spacing, circuit count or capacity.

  • Locate utilities, wells, septic components, easements, structures and protected setbacks.
  • Confirm drill or excavation access, header routing and the mechanical-room entry.
  • Identify rock, difficult drilling, restricted access, required site-access creation, vacuum-truck needs and restoration responsibilities.
  • Match final loop capacity and flow to the verified load and selected equipment.

AIRFLOW & COMFORT

Existing ducts can change either choice.

Geothermal does not automatically require new ductwork, and conventional equipment does not automatically fit the existing ducts. Available airflow, external static pressure, filter and return restrictions, room balance and operating-stage airflow all need review.

SCOPE BEFORE PRICE

Compare installed projects, not headline equipment prices.

The current West Jeff lite screen prices an ordinary geothermal equipment installation, a supported loop-field price class, a directional-bored header allowance, a permit allowance and estimated sales tax. It includes the desuperheater and standard hot-water plumbing described in the preliminary scope.

Electrical circuits or service upgrades, duct modifications, landscaping or hardscape restoration, rock or difficult drilling, restricted access, creating site access and vacuum truck rental are excluded until the site walk defines them. A conventional proposal should be reviewed with the same discipline.

MONTHLY DECISION

A monthly number needs its terms beside it.

The installed project price is not the same thing as a lease or financing payment. A verified comparison should identify who owns the equipment and incentives, the payment term, qualification requirements, included service, maintenance obligations, transfer or buyout provisions, and what happens at the end of the agreement.
