Can existing ductwork handle geothermal airflow?

A planning CFM range is a useful warning light, not a duct approval. The final answer comes from room loads, equipment airflow tables, external static pressure, return and filter capacity, zoning and operation at every stage.

Existing ducts may be reusable, may need targeted changes or may be a poor fit for the selected equipment. The decision should not be made from duct dimensions alone. Airflow must reach each room at an acceptable pressure and sound level while the equipment remains inside its approved operating range.

Duct modifications are not included in the current online price. The site walk identifies restrictions, leakage, room-balance problems and required changes before they become a separate written scope.

PLANNING AIRFLOW

CFM connects equipment capacity to the distribution system.

The lite quote currently shows 360–425 CFM per nominal ton as a planning range. That helps frame the discussion, but the final airflow comes from the exact unit, operating stage, sensible and latent requirements, auxiliary heat, manufacturer settings and the room-by-room design.

A total CFM number does not prove room comfort.

The system can meet a measured total while individual rooms remain starved, noisy or over-supplied. Branch airflow and room loads still have to align.

RESISTANCE TO AIRFLOW

External static pressure shows how hard the blower is working.

Filters, coils, returns, supply trunks, dampers, registers and restrictive fittings all contribute resistance. A field measurement across the external system, interpreted with the manufacturer blower data, helps determine whether the selected airflow is actually available.

  • Measure total external static pressure in defined operating stages.
  • Record pressure drops across the filter and relevant coils.
  • Compare measured pressure with the exact blower table and settings.
  • Check delivered airflow rather than assuming the configured value is achieved.

PART-LOAD OPERATION

Two-stage and variable systems need more than one airflow check.

Lower compressor stages can improve comfort and sound when the blower, controls and room distribution remain balanced. Higher stages and auxiliary heat can expose return restrictions or noisy supply paths. Commissioning should verify the active airflow and control sequence across the intended operating range.

COMMON BOTTLENECKS

Returns and filters deserve the same attention as supplies.

An undersized return path, restrictive filter cabinet, closed bedroom door or blocked transfer path can limit the whole system. The review should also look for leakage in attics, garages and crawlspaces because lost or gained air changes both equipment performance and the building load.

CONTROLS & ZONING

A thermostat call changes the airflow problem.

Zoning can reduce the open duct area while equipment capacity is active. Bypass strategies, minimum zone airflow, stage limits, damper position and discharge-air safeguards must be coordinated with the selected equipment. Communicating controls add useful information but do not repair an undersized duct system.

  • Document which zones can call alone and together.
  • Confirm minimum airflow at every permitted equipment stage.
  • Coordinate compressor, blower, auxiliary heat and damper sequences.
  • Verify temperature, pressure and equipment safety limits.

The quote tool derives a preliminary airflow range from the screened nominal equipment class and records the customer’s duct location. It does not claim the existing system can deliver that airflow, and it does not add ductwork to the online price.

What turns the range into a duct decision.

  • Complete or review room-by-room loads and design airflow.
  • Inspect supply, return, filter, coil, zoning and unconditioned-space ducts.
  • Measure external static pressure and component pressure drops.
  • Verify airflow at low, high and auxiliary stages where applicable.
  • Check room delivery, return paths, sound and comfort complaints.
  • Define repairs, sealing, balancing or modifications as a separate scope.
  • Commission equipment settings and leave measured results with the project record.
